Jeux des Cartes – Duo Riessler-Charial

22. September 8:30 pm

Sound collages with funfair undertones
The familiar sounds of the street organ include the tinny ‘crash! crash! boom! boom!’ of the carousel and the humble droning in a backstreet. Yet, there is also another side to the street organ. Particularly when it is teamed up with the bass clarinet. When Michael Riessler and Pierre Charial are at work you can forget all the prejudice that exists against the street organ. Charial is able to elicit from his organ, where the music is encoded on perforated cards, a bizarre firework of tones and sound collages inspired by works for mechanical musical instruments across the centuries. Riessler navigates his own boundary crossings between jazz, new music and advanced folklore. Together they create a highly complex figuration with funfair undertones.
