“Have mercy and grant us peace”: under this heading compositions by Arvo Pärt provide a link running through the programme in the school chapel at the St. Ursula Gymnasium, which has been specially opened to the public on this occasion. Its splendid acoustic is ideally suited to Pärt’s music, eschewing superficial virtuosity but providing the space required for the sound of every note to unfold. The firmly structured and cryptic Summa for string quartet is compelling in its moving simplicity. As well as two other choral works by Pärt, there is a chance to hear pieces by Brahms, Rheinberger and Sebastian Voges.
