The Giving Tree
Shel Silverstein's famous picture book "The Giving Tree" tells of the lifelong relationship between a generous tree and an ungrateful boy. The end is very sad: for the former boy, as an old man, only a tree stump is left. It seems obvious to interpret this parable as an image of man's mercilessness towards nature. Inspired by this story, the experimental Rothko String Quartet lets nature conduct a trial against humanity. As both plaintiff and defendant, the musicians of the quartet interpret works from the pens of composers from the Renaissance to the present. The voices of nature rise powerfully in the music.
